On the 2nd of January we caught the midday train to Arles to see the Roman ruins but the whole town was closed for lunch.
After a short look around the town and the ruins, we decided to catch the next train out.
We spent ages figuring out ways to get some wheels off a trolley for our backpacks, but they didn't come off.

Next up is Nimes for a late lunch. There are also Roman ruins, but we didn't walk around too long as it was getting late and the hostel was closed so we caught the train to Sète.
Obviously, travelling over the Christmas/New Year period is not terribly advisable.

We arrived at Sète late and stayed at the hostel overnight with only two other travellers: François and Alena from Québec.
The next day had a short look around Sète which we thought was a nice fishing port. The locals call it the Venice of France which we felt was a slight exaggeration.

We then caught the train, again around mid day and headed for Perpignan and travelled through a very Camargue like countryside; flat, swampy and pretty desolate. Looking although there was an abundance of vineyards. We sat right near the front of the train which was quite good, with a view to each side and up ahead as well.

We had to change trains near Narbonne and so at the moment I have just had lunch and catching up on this diary. The train pulled into Perpignan and we decided not to stop and go on to Gerona in Spain. On the way
to Perpignan we passed some of the bleakest landscape we’ve seen; water, swamps, rocks and bush on both sides – quite amazing and sinister.
PS: Pornography is banned in Spain so all the Spanish go to Perpignan for their kicks as France is okay about it. This makes Perpignan the porn centre of Spain.
